Lest We Forget
Today, I just thought I would publish a poem that my daughter wrote for Rememberance Day:
Soldier Boy
by Sharisse

She understood he had to fight
In the war so dark and cold,
And she was very proud to tell,
Of her boy so brave and bold,
But brave and bold she could not be,
Inside she was full of misery,
And to her God she did plea,
For the protection of her soldier boy
Night after night she prayed and wept,
With tears that just could not be fought,
Each day was full of busy tasks,
But still he consumed her thoughts,
With the mailman letters came,
And for his courage he gained fame,
But still the war she did blame,
For the parting of her soldier boy
As each season slowly changed,
The days turned into years,
His letters started to grow sparse,
Her days now consumed by fears,
In her mind she knew he was gone,
But still her heart yearned to be wrong,
Now by unmarked graves she walks along,
Remembering her soldier boy
The image above is from the battle at Vimy Ridge in France, where British & French troops had suffered over 200,000 casualties. In 1917 the Canadian troops were tasked with the re-capture of Vimy Ridge, a highly strategic site held by the Germans. 30,000 Canadians attacked at dawn on Monday April 9. Three days later the ridge was under Allied control. This was a turning point battle in the war but at a great cost with 10,602 wounded and 3,598 killed.
We honor your sacrifice… and remember. 66,665 Canadians died in WWI and 44,893 in WWII.
